Location:
United States of America

Description:

As a recently retired 800m runner, Chanelle’s passion is to instill all of the knowledge she’s gained over the years into the next generation of athletes. Chanelle was a high-school prodigy, competing in the prestigious Prefontaine Classic and the Olympic Trials at only 17 years old. Her senior year she was named the 2008 Gatorade Player of the Year, an award given to the top high school athlete of all sports. She went on to the University of Tennessee where she struggled to handle the pressure and expectations that come with being a high school superstar. Chanelle is passionate about helping athletes develop a healthy relationship with sport because the dark times she struggled with throughout her collegiate career is something she knows a lot of other athletes are dealing with.

After college, Chanelle almost walked away from track and field, but a change in mentality and how she approached the sport helped her immensely. She went on to win gold in the 800m at the 2014 World Indoor Championships, becoming the first American woman to ever win the 800m in an indoor or outdoor world championship.

In the years following, Chanelle struggled tremendously with injuries and health issues forcing her to miss out on the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2017, 2018, and 2019. She knows what it takes to overcome setbacks and loves to encourage others to do the same. Chanelle found herself in great form in 2020, but the US Olympic Trials were postponed due to the pandemic. She decided 2021 was going to be her last season and was determined to make it her best. Unfortunately, in November of 2020, Chanelle broke a bone in her foot for the third time. It looked like her career had come to an abrupt end. How could she be ready in time for the Olympic Trials just seven months away?!

Chanelle found a way and went on to place fifth at the trials in a new personal best time of 1:58.73. Although she failed to make her dreams of becoming an Olympian come true, Chanelle looks back on her career and smiles because she never gave up. Chanelle knows the true prize is not in what you obtain but in who you become along the way.

Motivation: What gets me out the door

There's a misconception that elite athletes wake up everyday ready to train. This simply is not true. I didn't always feel like stepping out the door to go run. On those days, I had to use my 'Why' to give me the motivation I needed. We can use this time to talk more about where I found that motivation and chat about what your 'Why' is so that you can tap into that motivation yourself.

More than an athlete

I'm super passionate about this topic! Handling the pressures of being an athlete can be tough, especially with how much of our identities get wrapped up in sport. Let's use this time to talk about how to handle that pressure and maintain identity outside of athletic pursuits.
